Quick-thinking woman stops man from escaping police chase

A quick-thinking woman was able to stop a man from escaping police after he allegedly held a woman against her will and assaulted another man.

It will be alleged around 6.30pm on 16 September, a 21-year-old man threatened a woman who was known to him and demanded she get into a Mazda 3 he was driving.

Officers tracked the car in an unmarked police car before successfully deploying a tyre deflation device on Nambour Connection Road near the Big Pineapple.

It will be further alleged the man accelerated away before running through a red light and crashing into a Toyota Camry at the intersection with Maroochydore Road.

The man fled from the Mazda 3 and ran into the north-bound traffic of the Bruce Highway.

A Rav4 stopped and the man allegedly punched the driver, a 64-year-old man, in the head several times before pulling him from the car.

The 21-year-old man got into the car and attempted to drive away, however a 52-year-old woman in the passenger seat pressed the “push button” to stop the car.

The man was unable to start the car again as the driver, who had the proximity keys in his pocket, was not in the vehicle.

Police then arrested the man.

The 21-year-old Nambour man has been charged with one count of deprivation of liberty (DV offence), robbery with violence and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He was due to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on 17 September.
