Making a difference

A simple 10-cent container is making a big difference for a Queensland not-for-profit dedicated to rescuing and rehoming schnauzers.

Since 2024, Schnauzer Rescue Queensland has raised more than $2,000 thanks to supporters returning over 20,000 containers through the state’s Containers for Change program.

The funds go directly toward veterinary care, dental surgery, and other essential needs for rescued schnauzers, as well as supporting responsible dog ownership and breeding initiatives.

The volunteer-led organisation relies on a network of passionate schnauzer lovers who collect eligible containers and donate their refunds via the Containers for Change app.

“Containers for Change is a brilliant way for us to raise additional funds rather than relying solely on direct donations,” said Kirk Muddle, President of Schnauzer Rescue Queensland.

“It’s a win-win; keep rubbish out of landfill while supporting schnauzers in need. We’d like to thank our loyal community who continue to support us, and we hope other charities and community groups see what’s possible through container refunds.”

Trevor Evans, Interim CEO of Container Exchange – the not-for-profit behind the scheme – said the initiative highlights the scheme’s purpose.

“It is heart warming to see 10-cent container recycling helping to find forever homes for dogs in need,” he said.

“Schnauzer Rescue Queensland is one of thousands of charities, community groups and not-for-profits across Queensland tapping into the power of the scheme to raise vital funds, reduce litter and protect our environment.”

Queenslanders wanting to help can donate their container refunds directly to Schnauzer Rescue Queensland through the Containers for Change app using member number C11443553.

With just a small act of recycling, locals can help ensure more schnauzers find loving homes.
