Sunshine Coast Grammar School has secured a major boost to its growing girls rugby program, appointing Hayley Maddick — current Brisbane Broncos NRLW player and Queensland State of Origin representative — as Head Coach.
Maddick brings elite-level experience to the role, having built an impressive sporting career that began in national touch football before transitioning to rugby league. She has since become a key member of the Broncos’ NRLW squad and earned selection for Queensland in the State of Origin arena.
Her appointment follows a standout year for Sunshine Coast Grammar’s girls rugby teams, which recorded exceptional results across local and regional rugby 7s and 10s competitions. The school has invested heavily in its Rugby Academy in recent years, positioning itself as a leader in female participation and high-performance pathways in the region.
“I hope to bring my experience from the elite level into a positive, supportive environment where girls can feel confident to learn, challenge themselves, and enjoy their rugby,” Maddick said.
Maddick joins a program already bolstered by high-profile backing, including Rugby Ambassador Gordon Bray AM, widely regarded as one of Australia’s most respected rugby commentators.
“I am excited to contribute to the program and its strong reputation for supporting its students and providing opportunities for growth,” Maddick said.
Sunshine Coast Grammar School Principal Mrs Anna Owen said the appointment reflected the school’s commitment to expanding opportunities for aspiring student-athletes.
“Hayley brings an elite playing experience and a passion for developing confident, capable young women. We are delighted to welcome her to our growing girls’ rugby program,” Mrs Owen said.
Beyond her school role, Maddick will also contribute to community inclusion initiatives. Next month, she and fellow Broncos NRLW player Georgia Bartlett will deliver a free workshop for adults and children living with disability at the school’s sports fields.
Supported by the Trainer Group Foundation, the session will feature fun team-based activities and a friendly game of touch football. The workshop forms part of a national series running from Canberra to Townsville, aimed at promoting participation and connection through sport.
The school said it was proud to welcome Maddick to its coaching ranks and to support inclusive community initiatives that extend beyond the playing field.
