Meet Elliott Chalmers, ALP

What is your background?

I was born and educated in regional Toowoomba. I have spent most of my career working for small businesses and I understand the importance of having a government that helps create jobs and invests in the services people need. I work in accounting and I know what a difference things like energy rebates and asset write offs that are being provided by our Federal Labor government mean. I’m young, enthusiastic and I have a passion for ensuring a fair go for the voters of Wide Bay.

Why do you think you would be a good candidate to represent the seat of Wide Bay?

If I am elected to represent Wide Bay, I promise I will fight for a better future for all of us.

I will fight for greater investment in local health services, more skills and training to support local jobs, and increased housing development so locals can access affordable and reliable housing.

If elected, what would you do to address each of the following issues?

Health services

Strengthening Medicare and properly funding our public hospitals are at the heart of this campaign for Labor. A re-elected Albanese government will deliver more bulk billing, more urgent care clinics, and cheaper PBS medicines. We’ll boost hospital funding by $1.7 billion. We’ve invested in women’s health with endometriosis and pelvic pain clinics and just last week announced a $1 billion investment in mental health services – something I know is important to so many people.

Cost of Living

I know how confronting it is when you do your local grocery shop and pay the rent – but things are getting better, we’re turning the corner. Labor’s economic management is helping fight inflation and reduce debt. We’ve provided tax cuts and we’ll do more, lowering your taxes, more energy bill relief, cheaper medicines, cheaper childcare, and cut student debt by 20 per cent. We’re delivering cost-of-living relief with more than 1 million jobs created under the Labor Government, the most ever in a single term of government. I will fight to ensure Wide Bay residents are included as we build a better future for Wide Bay. Unfortunately the LNP have voted against every cost of living measure that Labor has provided.

Immigration and border control

The Labor Government inherited a deeply broken migration system – a system with almost one million unprocessed visa applications sitting in a backlog, which enabled organised crime and exploitation. This wasn’t delivering the skilled workers Australian businesses needed. The Albanese Government will continue to bring migration levels back to normal and build a migration system Australians can trust, and that helps us get the skills we need.

Electricity Prices

Labor’s $1.7 billion investment in the Energy Savings program, provides real financial support to households, and businesses, to cut bills. We’re rolling out our Rewiring the Nation fund to upgrade our electricity grid and we’ve announced real savings for households, and small business, through our home battery program. This is in stark contrast to the $600 billion nuclear scheme proposed by the opposition that will mean a $1200 increase to your power bill.

National roads and rail infrastructure

The Prime Minister announced a $7.2 billion to upgrade the Bruce Highway and fix to improve safety for the movement of passengers, freight and tourists right here in Wide Bay on 6 January. It’s so important to invest in our roads.
