Noosa Mayor speaks out on homicide investigation

Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart has spoken out following Sunday’s tragic incident at Noosa Heads.

An 87-year-old Noosa man died after he was brutally assaulted in Noosa Woods on the Hastings Street boardwalk about 6am Sunday morning while he was going for a morning walk and a 69-year-old man was seriously assaulted on Hastings Street around the same time.

“With the news of yesterday’s tragic death in Noosa, like many in our community I am heartbroken and devastated,” Ms Stewart said.

“On behalf of councillors and our community, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends at this difficult time.

“There is no doubt this senseless loss of one of our residents will have a profound impact on many in our community.

“Police are continuing their investigations and Council will provide whatever assistance is necessary.”

A 27-year-old Gympie man remains in police custody and has been charged with the serious assault of a 69-year-old man.

It is believed the second assaulted man was not known to the 87-year-old.

The 27-year-old was set to face the Maroochydore Magistrates Court this morning.
