Many bush hands make light work

There’s a pretty pathway just north of Peregian Creek that local bike riders will know well as a tough pedal.

Shaded by stately Morton Bay Ash, this Noosa Council Reserve is a special place where the Council put in a great deal of work to restore the natural bush.

Sadly, over the years the weeds began creeping back, something that the Marcus Beach Bushcare Association (MBBA) noticed and wanted to address.

Being a small group that already works along selected beach tracks and creeks from Peregian Creek to Castaways Creek, they really didn’t have the resources to take on another project.

Enter Coolum and Northshore Coast Care with an offer to hold one of their Thursday morning group weed at the reserve.

The result? A weedathon with 25 enthusiastic and skilled volunteers.

The guest weeders made huge inroads into the Asparagus Fern and Fishbone Fern at the top of the hill. Nine bags full of weeds, plus a huge pink skip and a weed mound left on site under plastic, well away from the path. The weeds will rot down under the plastic to become mulch for the native species that once again have a chance to flourish.

“The MBBA is really grateful to the Coolum Coastcare group,” MBBA president Jude Tulloch said.

“I have always taken a big picture, whole of coast approach caring for the environment. Birds, animals and trees, or weeds for that matter, don’t differentiate between council regions.

“It’s wonderful to have the support of our sister organisation whose members are so generous that they have agreed to put in another guest appearance next year.”

The Marcus Group Bushcare Association is part of Coastal Connect, a project funded by the Noosa Council to rehabilitate significant areas within the coastal reserves.

Coastal Connect includes the bushcare groups from Sunshine Beach, Castaways Beach, Marcus Beach and Peregian Beach.
