Sunshine Coast Music Awards set to boost a struggling night-time economy

The Sunshine Coast’s music community is gearing up for its biggest night of nights with tickets now on sale for the inaugural Sunshine Coast Music Awards (SCMAs).

This landmark event, to be held at Birtinya live music venue The Station on 1 June, will shine the spotlight on the region’s newest and brightest crop of musicians.

The awards will also reflect the hard work of the industry as a whole, while promoting the Sunshine Coast as a premier destination for touring artists.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli has praised the SCMAs saying it’s an “event not to be missed”.

“I am personally very supportive of the music industry, and I recognise the cultural and economic value it brings to our community and, importantly, the joy too,” Mayor Natoli said.

“Support for our music industry is also incredibly important for developing our night-time economy, a key action in our Regional Economic Development Strategy and crucial for attracting and retaining talent in the region.

“I am incredibly excited to see these awards come to fruition after years of hard work and determination from the Sunshine Coast Music Industry Collective.

“This is an event not to be missed.”

QMusic artistic director Kris Stewart said he’s excited for the Sunshine Coast music community.

“In my role I have seen the incredible depth of talent in the region, from the internationally-acclaimed musicians that reside there, the mid-career artists getting their first international shows, and the emerging artists that we see playing gigs every weekend,” Mr Stewart said.

“I also love that it celebrates not just the artists but the people behind them – punters, recording studios, and visual artists.

“To recognise and reward all of this hard work is invaluable, and I can’t wait to attend the event and join the Sunshine Coast community in celebrating its place in the Australian music scene.

“I am so excited that Sunshine Coast music is being celebrated in this way.”

All attendees at this year’s Sunshine Coast Music Awards will be in the draw to win two tickets to this year’s Woodford Folk Festival.

But the lucky door prize is only one part of the night’s major celebrations, with unforgettable performances expected from a diverse mix of local acts.

And special appearances from music industry legends.

Watch the Rising Star Award winner leave with a guaranteed spot on the stage at Big Pineapple Festival, and the Sunshine Coast’s most-dedicated Punter win a year’s worth of free gigs.

Don’t miss this rare networking opportunity, rubbing shoulders with the who’s who of Sunshine Coast music.

The Sunshine Coast Music Awards is produced by Sunshine Coast Music Industry Collective (SCMIC) and proudly supported by the Sunshine Coast Council.

One in 41 people on the Sunshine Coast identify as being involved in the music industry. These awards are the first formal acknowledgement of the people who work so hard to make it a reality.

SCMIC encourages all facets of the industry to be involved in the awards including; musicians, venues, producers, creative artists, and industry members.

The judging of the awards will be undertaken by a diverse range of independent music industry professionals.
