Boreen Point tourist operator Kanu Kapers Australia has partnered with conservation group Queensland Koala Crusaders to reduce their carbon footprint and increase koala habitat.
Kanu Kapers owners Vivienne Golding, a world champion kayaker, and partner Kym McGregor provide kayak tours in the Noosa Everglades and were recent winners of the Green Award for Ecotourism in the 2018 Adventure Tourism Awards Australia and New Zealand.
Kym said their aim was to make their business completely carbon neutral.
“The only carbon issue is our client’s car journey to the tour,” Kym said. “To offset this we ask our clients to make a donation and we are granting 100 per cent of
the donations to our partner. All money donated to the Koala Crusaders is used for the wildlife corridors and safe havens they are creating to protect koalas in this area. Every $7 donated allows the Koala Crusaders to plant one tree.”
Kym said their clients had been so generous they had already filled a tin to present to the Koala Crusaders.”Both Vivienne and I are passionate about helping create safe habitat for our Australian icon, the koala,” she said.Queensland Koala Crusaders are delighted with the partnership and praised the efforts of Kanu Kapers.
“Their initiative is a model of what can be done locally to make a difference for the koala and the thousand other species that live under their umbrella as well as ourselves,” a spokeswoman said. “Experiencing the natural beauty of the region and helping us preserve it for all to enjoy in the future is a win for everyone – especially our koalas.”
