Holidays and heart create great art

Jennifer Baker’s time at her holiday house at Boreen Point often involves some frantic activity.

After wandering the shores of Lake Cootharaba and Boreen Point, Jennifer returns to her holiday house studio to capture on canvas the effects of light on her environment.

There she works on studies, focusing on light, shade, textures and shapes around trees, rocks, and water. Some of these works will be on display in the Carriage Rooms at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery from March 1 to April 2

“My key focus is to capture the magical illusions and colours created by sunlight,” Jennifer says.

Kathryn Tombs and her daughter-in-law, Aroha Tombs, have put their hearts and minds together for their exhibition, “Purity and Love” in The Gallery’s Banana Shed February 22 to March 26. The title of their exhibition represents the meanings of each of their Christian names, Kathryn (purity) and Aroha (love).

Contemporary and whimsical are the tones of Kathryn’s works. Her quirky characters with an Australiana focus are painted with bright acrylic paints and confident brush strokes. The former nurse of 25 years says her main aim is to put a smile on the faces of people who see her work, while trying to connect with them at a deeper level.

Aroha’s contemporary artwork employs mixed media, textured and acrylic paints. The young mum and emerging artist’s preferred palette consists of natural earthy hues. She uses her “pure and minimalistic colours to evoke feelings of simplicity and peace.”

The volunteer-run Pomona Railway Station Gallery is at 10 Station St, Pomona. Opening hours are 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Friday; 10am to 2pm Saturday and Sunday.
