Plant a tree for a koala this National Tree Day

Have you read Blinky Bill or Koala Lou to your little ones lately? Taken them to an animal park or zoo and observed the sleepy, cuddly koalas? What about planted a tree that would become a koala’s home?

This National Tree Day, Sunday 28 July, bring along your family and friends to Doonan Creek Environmental Reserve between 8:30-11:30am to get your hands in the earth and help plant native trees that will become koala habitat.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay encouraged the community to dig in and enjoy a range of family-friendly activities.

“We invite everyone across the region to be part of Australia’s largest tree planting event,” Cr McKay said.

“Last year across our great country, over 200,000 Australians participated in the special day, planting more than 700,000 plants at almost 3,000 locations.

“It is important that our Sunshine Coast community continues to plays its part in making a positive impact on the environment.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for people to get outdoors this winter with family or friends, connect with nature and help make a difference.”

In addition to planting native trees and shrubs in the environmental reserve, people attending the Sunshine Coast’s National Tree Day event will have the opportunity to learn about, see and even take a selfie with a koala, with the help from the team at Wildlife HQ.

For those interested in learning more about the land and its history, Tais K’Reala of Biral Tours will host a cultural guided walk through the reserve.

And for the young and young at heart, be sure to get your face painted and then dance the day away to the soulful sounds of SoLar, who has serenaded the coast’s National Tree Day attendees for four years in a row.

Brunch and coffee will also be on offer throughout the morning, thanks to Claudes’ Food and the Coffee Crew.

Gloves and equipment for planting will be provided. Participants are asked to wear sturdy shoes, be sun safe and bring a reusable water bottle.
