Tribute paid to police service animals

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) today recognises Purple Poppy Day, commemorating the incredible sacrifices, loyalty, and courage of war and service animals.

Held annually on 24 February, Purple Poppy Day is a tribute to animals who serve alongside humans and play a vital role in protecting and serving communities.

Queensland police are privileged to work alongside some of these remarkable animals, including police dogs and police horses across the state.

The QPS Dog Squad includes more than 100 highly trained police dogs, who assist in detecting drugs, explosives, and firearms, tracking offenders, and supporting search and rescue operations.

Our Mounted Police Unit has been serving Queensland for more than 150 years and is currently home to 12 police horses, who play a crucial role in crowd control, search operations, and community engagement.

The Purple Poppy symbolises the bravery and dedication of these unsung heroes, honouring their contributions and sacrifices in the line of duty.

The QPS Animal Memorial, located at the Oxley Police Academy (pictured), stands as a lasting tribute to the service and sacrifices of these animals.

The sandstone plinth, adorned with a bronze plaque depicting a police dog and a police horse, honours the legacy of the animals that have served the QPS over the years.

By wearing a Purple Poppy, we honour their bravery, loyalty, and the profound impact they have had on human lives.

As we commemorate Purple Poppy Day, let us take a moment to reflect on the courage and dedication of all service animals, past and present.

Whether they are police dogs, horses, or assistance animals, their contributions to our safety and wellbeing are immeasurable.

Lest we forget – the sacrifices of our service animals will never be forgotten.
