Trek for Parkinsons

A group from the Sunshine Coast have just returned from another successful trek to the world’s highest base camp, Mt Everest in Nepal.

They’re raising awareness and funds to help end Parkinson’s Disease in Australia, supporting Shake It Up Australia.

Thirteen Aussies and Kiwis all made the effort to reach this mighty mountain, dealing with trekking at high altitude, as they reached 5346m.

Gary Gillett from Trek Ready Himalayas said, “It is an effort to prepare. Have we got the Shake it Up shirts on? Do I have the Century 21 Flag ready? Seems strange now but these simple things take some mental effort. It’s about as close as I want to come to having PD, and living with brain fog, and the slowness of thought and action associated, sleep disturbance, apathy and fatigue, cognitive impairment, slowed movement.“

“If that was a taste of PD, then we need to do all that we can to end Parkinson’s Disease.

“Mt Everest Base Camp. Yes we made it, all 13 of us, What an achievement for everyone, to stand at the base of the world’s highest mountain and say we did this.

“Three times to the world’s highest base camp is plenty, in 2025 I will return to Nepal for the seventh time, and this time we will trek the Annapurna circuit.

“Our group will be challenged to help out again and together we hope to see an end to PD. And the group is filling fast already.“
