Security tips for living or holidaying in multi-residential buildings

The Sunshine Coast hosts an influx of visitors around the Christmas period.

When it comes to high-rise residential buildings and apartments, security is essential.

Sunshine Coast police are encouraging residents and tourists to be proactive in ensuring their units and cars are properly secured over this busy time.

On 5 and 6 December, it is alleged that four units in Fiji Court, Parrearra had items stolen from outside their units and from inside their unlocked vehicles.

A 14-year-old Parrearra boy and a 14-year-old Beerwah boy were charged for these offences.

The 14-year-old Parreara boy was cautioned under the Youth Justices Act.

The 14-year-old Beewah boy was charged with possess dangerous drug, five counts of enter premises and commit an indictable offence, breach of bail, fraud, attempted stealing, two counts of stealing, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, possess stolen property and three counts of trespass and has been remanded in custody.

On 12 December, it is alleged unknown offenders entered a holiday apartment through an unlocked sliding door in Alexander Heads.

The offenders stolen keys and a wallet from kitchen bench. This is a friendly reminder to place all items of value out of sight and in a secure place.

Avoid storing excess belongings and valuables in garage areas and lock-up garages.

If you are visiting the Sunshine Coast, it is a good idea to become familiar with safety procedures and simple courteous considerations within the accommodation you are staying.

– How will common areas of the building be supervised?

– What can people do if they don’t know the person entering the building behind them?

– Is there a building code word used by the residents?

– Avoid lending keys to anyone.

– Ensure you are aware of building evacuation procedures.

– Lock all windows in your apartment.

– Secure bicycles in locked storage and take off the wheel and seat when not in use.

Many high-rise break-ins occur through open or unlocked balcony doors. It’s important to remember living or staying several floors up does not guarantee absolute security from intruders.
