Scouring local op shops and vintage markets is a popular past time for many.
For Beryl Purvis, somebody else’s throw-aways are re-purposed as treasured jewellery.
As 3D Artist of the Month, Beryl’s collection of tribal jewellery goes on display at Pomona Railway Station Gallery for the month of March.
Beryl said growing up on a farm in Zimbabwe surrounded by African creativity and inspiration was the starting point for her art.
Travels through the “Hippy Trail” in the ’70s with husband and celebrated artist Noosa Hinterland artist, Trevor Purvis through South East Asia, Nepal, Iran, Turkey and Afghanistan (where many of her beads originate from) compounded her love of ethnic jewellery.
She learnt her craft in Abu Dhabi before more travels through the Middle East and Russia, where she also frequently scoured markets
Why beads?
“I love their use of colour and recycled objects including glass, bone, shell, wood and even coins, Beryl said.
“And I love repurposing other people’s throw-aways into my creations.”
The not-for-profit, volunteer-run Pomona Railway Station Gallery is at 10 Station St, Pomona. Opening hours are 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Friday; 10am to 2pm Saturday and Sunday.
