Election treats for Ukraine

On a cold and wet election day, the Anglican Church at Sunshine Beach counted on the voting crowds heading to the polling booths at the school across the road and staged a sausage sizzle and array of stalls to raise money for Ukrainians in a war zone.

Voters tucked into a sausage, picked up a few cakes and browsed the stalls selling goods including plants, crafts, books and jewellery.

Reverend Lynda Johnson said it was a good opportunity to take advantage of their pole position to raise money to assist people facing a terrible situation in Ukraine.

She said all money raised by the church would be sent to Ukraine through the Anglican Relief and Development Fund Australia (ARDFA) which was working with European Christians Mission International (ECMI) and New Life Evangelical Free Church in Kyiv to provide immediate and longer term assistance.

“We’ve already been able to provide two vans to transport supplies and hope to contribute more,“ she said.

Rev’d Johnson said the church partners were delivering food and medicine from a location near Ukraine’s western border to people cut off to resources and assisting refugees fleeing the country.
