Unitywater scholarship applications open for UniSC students

Applications are open for three Unitywater scholarships, awarded to University of the Sunshine Coast students each year to help them kick-start their careers.

Unitywater Executive Manager People, Culture, and Safety, Kenan Hibberd, said the utility offered scholarships as part of its career pathways program to attract emerging talent to its workforce.

“We’re proud to offer a number of opportunities to students through our scholarships, vacation work and graduate programs,” Mr Hibberd said.

“Since we started working with UniSC in 2014, we have supported 21 students prepare for their future careers with Unitywater Scholarships,” he said.

There are three scholarships are available, each providing $12,000 in support paid in instalments each semester over a two or three-year period. These are:

• The Bright Future in Engineering Scholarship for students undertaking a Bachelor of Civil or Mechanical Engineering degree. Students must have completed at least one to two years of study.

• The Fiona Waterhouse Women in STEM Scholarship for female students studying a Bachelor of Computer Science, ICT or a Bachelor degree within the School of Science and Engineering.

• The Bright Future for First Nations Students Scholarship for students who identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person and are studying degrees in Business, ICT, Commerce, Science or Engineering.

Murrumba Downs resident and Environmental Management student, Genevieve Dennis, received this year’s Women in STEM Scholarship, which she said has “dramatically” helped her.

“I pay for my university fees upfront and this is helping cover a third of my degree – it’s such a fantastic feeling knowing that’s taken care of, so I can dedicate more time to my studies,” Genevieve said.

“I found out I received the scholarship while I was in class, and I was so excited that I was speechless for the rest of the lesson,” she said.

Mr Hibberd said Genevieve was a standout applicant and a worthy recipient of the scholarship.

“Genevieve’s passion for sustainability and genuine interest in our organisation was evident following a university site visit to our Maleny Wastewater Treatment Plant and wetlands,” he said.

“Genevieve will also complete 100 hours of paid work in our environment team in the coming months, and we look forward to her contribution.”
