Plane crash

Police are continuing to investigate a fatal light aircraft crash that claimed the lives of two men, with authorities confirming the pilot was a 73-year-old man from Beenleigh, south of Brisbane.

Emergency services were called to the scene after the aircraft came down during a planned flight, which had been logged with aviation authorities prior to departure. Despite the rapid response, both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger is believed to be from Sydney. Formal identification of the passenger is continuing, with police working to notify next of kin.

Investigators have confirmed the flight was authorised and recorded through standard aviation procedures, however the intended purpose of the journey remains unclear. The aircraft was reportedly on the way to a small town outside Tamworth, but police say it is too early to determine why the trip was being undertaken.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has been notified and is expected to lead the technical investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the aircraft’s mechanical condition, weather factors and pilot history. Police will support the ATSB investigation and prepare a report for the coroner.

Local authorities have secured the crash site while specialist investigators conduct detailed examinations. Witnesses in the area have been urged to contact police if they have dashcam footage or information that may assist the investigation.

A police spokesperson said the deaths were not being treated as suspicious, but emphasised that a full investigation was required to determine the cause of the crash.

Gold Coast Police District Superintendent Brett Jackson said: “The vehicle, shortly after take-off, has unfortunately crashed. That crash has been so significant that both occupants were unable to survive.”

The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with aviation, even when flights are carefully planned and logged. A report will be prepared for the coroner following the conclusion of investigations.
