Detectives target drug trafficking

Detectives from the Sunshine Coast’s Drug and Serious Crime Taskforce have closed phase two of Operation Tango Birch, targeting the trafficking of dangerous drugs by organised crime groups within the Sunshine Coast, resulting in the further arrest of 15 people on 93 offences.

The operation has incorporated the expertise of detectives from the Sunshine Coast as well as specialists from Crime and Intelligence Command, targeting a crime syndicate operating from the Sunshine Coast which then expanded into other areas of Queensland.

Operation Tango Birch started in December 2020 targeting the distribution of commercial quantities of drugs including cocaine, MDMA, cannabis, and methylamphetamine in an area spanning from Logan in the south and Bundaberg in the north.

Phase one of the operation resulted in 16 people arrested on 45 offences and included the seizure of over $110,000.

On May 19 and 20, 2022, officers closed phase two of the operation, executing 13 search warrants, culminating in the arrest of 15 people on 93 charges.

During this phase, police seized $70,000 cash, a Harley Davidson valued $30,000, an arrested the primary target – a Rebels OMCG member charged with trafficking cocaine, steroids, cannabis and MDMA.

A 25-year-old Little Mountain man has been charged with four counts of trafficking dangerous drugs, three counts of possessing anything in the use of crime and possessing dangerous drugs and one count of possessing property obtained from trafficking or supplying.

He was due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Friday 20 May.
