Stay home, says Minister

South East Queenslanders should avoid all non-essential travel on Monday with significant road closures and extremely limited public transport options, major arterial roads cut and floods across highways and suburban roads.

“We’ve had to close parts of the Gateway Motorway, Ipswich Motorway, Bruce Highway, and dozens of major roads across South East Queensland,” Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said.

“The Bruce Highway between Caboolture and Caloundra is expected to be closed for some time, and is cut at several points further north between the Sunshine Coast and Maryborough.

“Even if some roads aren’t flooded, we’ve seen them damaged by this extreme weather event, creating dangerous driving conditions, so please stay off the roads.”

Mr Bailey said there would also be service reductions and cancelations across the train, bus and ferry network on Monday.

“SEQ rail services were suspended from around 1.45pm Sunday and will not be available before mid-morning Monday at the earliest,” he said.

“The impacts of these services reductions will be lessened by region-wide school closures and people being asked to work from home where possible.”

Sunbus Sunshine Coast will operate services on Monday with some disruptions. There will be no dedicated school buses running to SEQ schools that are closed tomorrow.Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said bus services ceased from Sunday at 4pm due to the dangerous weather conditions.

“This weather event is rapidly changing and if it’s unsafe for our buses and ferry services to operate, then it’s unsafe for cars to be on the road too,” he said.

Mr Bailey said with more than 1000 road closures across the state associated with this weather, the key message is to stay safe by staying home.

“Even if conditions clear, we are advising people to expect service interruptions and delays,” he said.

“We’ll be assessing the situation further on Monday and will be aiming to get normal services back up and running as soon as we can.”
