New laws to deter knife crime

District Crime Prevention Coordinator Sunshine Coast partnered with National Retail Association to conduct in-store visits with retailers at Sunshine Plaza.

New laws will come into effect that prohibit the sale of knives and other controlled items to minors on 1 September, signifying a major step towards reducing weapon accessibility.

These laws will also require retailers to securely store particular controlled items such as double-edged knives, machetes, tomahawks, and axes, as well as display signage regarding these age-restricted items.

In a joint effort, the Queensland Police Service has partnered with National Retail Association to help businesses understand the new laws and transition smoothly.

On 17 July, District Crime Prevention Coordinator Sunshine Coast partnered with National Retail Association to conduct in-store visits with retailers at Sunshine Plaza.

The interactions informed retailers of the new requirements and were a great opportunity to engage about the new legislation.

A range of resources are available for businesses help to prepare for these changes, including a comprehensive Guide for Sellers.
