Show your support for families of veterans

For more than 100 years, Legacy Australia has looked after the families of veterans who served our country.

Legacy Week is an opportunity for us to assist this important cause.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli, together with Sunshine Coast Legacy, is calling on the community to support Legacy Australia during Legacy Week, also known as Badge Week.

“Running from 1-7 September this year, Legacy Week is the annual, national appeal to raise awareness of, and funds for, the families of those Australian Defence Force men and women who’ve lost their lives or have ongoing health issues,” Mayor Natoli said.

“Legacy was formed in 1923 by the soldiers returned from World War I who saw the dire circumstances of the tens of thousands of veterans, and the widows and children left behind.”

Legacy now supports 34,000 individuals and families across Australia with more than 3400 volunteer members.

Mayor Natoli encouraged everyone to look out for the dedicated Sunshine Coast Legacy volunteers selling Legacy badges and merchandise at many locations across the region during Legacy Week – including at shopping centres, markets and RSL clubs.

“Your donations can deliver personal, long-lasting help to families,” she said.

Legacy Sunshine Coast Chair Rhondda Poor said Legacy was a source of support and advocacy for many families during challenging times.

“We provide help with accessing war pensions and other entitlements through to providing ongoing companionship and involvement in social activities,” Ms Poor said.

“Sunshine Coast Legacy Group has around 35 dedicated volunteer members, known as Legatees, who support almost 700 Legacy beneficiaries including widows, children and people with a disability.

“Last year, through the generosity of the Sunshine Coast community, more than $23,000 was raised during Legacy Week.

“Legacy volunteers will be out and about during Legacy Week selling badges and merchandise to help raise funds for the charity.”
