More than 40 volunteers joined Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) for a community weed removal event at the Noosa River Mouth, targeting the invasive American Sea Rocket.
With the help of three boats and two canoes, the group removed 35 bags of the fast-spreading weed to help protect the surrounding sand islands, which provide vital nesting habitat for migratory birds.
NICA committee member Yanni van Zijl said the morning was a success, with volunteers enjoying fine weather, morning tea and the chance to make new friends.
“Unfortunately there is still work to be done,” Yanni said.
“We’ll be heading out again on 9 October to finish the job.”
The next weed removal day will depart from Noosa O Boats, beside the Gympie Terrace tennis courts, at 8am, returning at midday.
