Tribute to Bondi victims

Volunteer lifesavers from Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club gathered on Peregian Beach to pay tribute to the victims of the Bondi Beach massacre on 14 December, standing in solidarity with the Bondi community, first responders and the Jewish community.

The tribute included a minute’s silence, reflection on the bravery of those who ran toward danger, and a reaffirmation of the values of compassion, unity and respect that underpin Australian values. Lifesavers formed a peaceful, respectful presence on the sand, honouring lives lost and those still recovering in hospital.

Club President Leigh McCready said the tribute was an important moment of collective mourning and resolve. “We stand shoulder to shoulder to pay respect to those who lost their lives, those who ran to help – including our lifesaving colleagues – and the wider Bondi and Jewish communities,” Ms McCready said.

She said the attack had deeply affected lifesavers nationwide. “Lifesavers and lifeguards across Australia have been reflecting on the selflessness of surf club and community members who responded without hesitation. Their courage represents the very best of who we are,” she said

Ms McCready added that the gathering was also about hope. “In times of darkness, we must choose light, reject hatred, violence and religious intolerance, and promise ourselves that this must never, never, never happen again,” she said.
