Helping OzHarvest expand

FOUR years on from its humble beginning in 2014, OzHarvest Sunshine Coast now delivers more than 7000kg of surplus quality food each month to 30 local charities, schools, community centres, churches and community programs.

As OzHarvest celebrates its fourth birthday, Nomads Golf Sunshine Coast is chipping in to help OzHarvest extend its capacity to bring goodness to the region.

OzHarvest had grown from a small local operation with three volunteers to more than 50 volunteers.

“We collect and redistribute food all the way from Gympie down south to Cotton Tree and inland into the hinterland,” OzHarvest Sunshine Coast coordinator, Michele Lipner, said.

“With the support of the community, we will eventually have a reach throughout the Sunshine Coast.“

With that support, Michele said OzHarvest had been able to acquire a new van and warehouse, and increase the amount of food collected.

“With the acquisition of the warehouse and van, we are now in the enviable position where we are running out of cold storage space to accommodate the amount of food we are receiving from our generous donors,” Michele said.

Nomads Golf Sunshine Coast is holding a charity golf day to chip in funds for a new cold storage unit.

Nomads was established in 1960 and now has clubs around the world with over 3000 members.

Geoff Cannings, vice captain of Nomads Golf Sunshine Coast, said the group was proud to lend a helping hand.

“They do great work and when we heard they needed a new and larger cold storage unit to accommodate the amount of food they are taking in, we felt that the charity golf day would be a perfect way to extend a helping hand.”
