Colour Ball juniors compete at Tewantin Tennis tournament

The Coloured Ball section of the Tewantin Junior Development Series hosted 44 tennis players from the Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast and Germany on Sunday 28 July.

Tewantin Noosa junior, Phoenix Jackson, directed the tournament as part of her course in the Sunshine Coast Tennis Emerging Leaders Program.

Phoenix said, “I appreciated the great sportsmanship and effort from all the players. It was good to see such enthusiasm from our younger players.”

Winner of the Green Ball Tournament was Riyon Walpola from the Sunshine Coast Grammer School who closely defeated runner-up Jack Dodd from the Tewantin Noosa Tennis Club.

The Orange Ball winner was Miles Mariconte (Gold Coast) with Theadore Kastrup (Caloundra Tennis Club) the runner-up.

Special awards for sportsmanship during the day went to Elliott Dickfos, Leia Steele, and Sasha Chalmers.

Best effort awards went to Alexander Temple, Adhvaid Dinu and Jake Butler.

Tennis Queensland development officer Jack Mellish said, “It was great to see the numbers at this event continue to grow as we develop a pathway for junior players on the coast.”

The use of red, orange and green balls in tennis is to ensure that the game is easier to learn for younger players.

Modified compression of the balls, smaller court size for Red and Orange Ball players and simplified scoring all makes the transition to the yellow ball more comfortable for the youngsters.
