Wrecks & Relics returns: A celebration of longboard legends aged 50 to 80+

The Noosa Malibu Club has announced the return of the Wrecks & Relics, an iconic weekend event celebrating the culture, community, and timeless style of longboard surfing.

Taking place on 7–8 June in beautiful Noosa, this unique gathering features nearly 100 surfers aged between 50 and 80 plus, making it one of the most unique surfing events in Australia. With lifetimes of surfing experience behind them, these competitors represent the enduring heart and soul of longboarding—proof that style, spirit, and stoke never age.

Club president Glen Gower said, “Wrecks & Relics is more than a nostalgia trip – it’s a living celebration of our passion for the beach, the ocean, and the culture of surfing.”

Now in its 21st year, Wrecks & Relics was first created by a few passionate members of the Noosa Malibu Club. What began as a small competition for older surfers quickly became a cherished tradition. At the first event, the oldest participant was just over 60. In a heartwarming evolution of the competition, 2024 saw the introduction of the inaugural Over-80s Open, with four octogenarians taking to the waves and showing the crowd how it’s done.

As the years have passed, many longtime participants now face physical health challenges—knee or hip replacements, shoulder surgeries, heart conditions, or other age-related issues. But their love of surfing remains.

To celebrate this resilient spirit, the Club is proud to introduce a brand-new division for 2025: the Gaffer Tape Invitational.

“This addition is particularly special,” Gower said, “because it offers a way for surfers who’ve faced health challenges to get back in the water and reconnect with their surfing community.”

It will give those who have previously been part of the Event a way to retain a connection with the Wrecks & Relics and hopefully set them on a path back to their former surfing status.

The 21st Wrecks & Relics promises to be an unforgettable weekend for longboarders aged 50 and over to connect, compete, and share their lifelong love of surfing.
