Q&A with Roma Sevens star Amy Lorenz

Born and raised in Roma, Amy Lorenz recently moved to the Sunshine Coast after graduating from St John’s Catholic School in 2024. The promising Rugby Sevens talent sat down with us to share her journey, memorable moments, and future aspirations.

Q: What was life like growing up in Roma?

A: Growing up in Roma was a unique and unforgettable experience. For most of my life, I lived out of town, surrounded by open spaces and the quiet countryside before moving into town in 2018. With an older brother and a younger sister, there was never a dull moment—we spent most of our time outdoors, helping Pop with the cows and making our own fun. The close-knit Roma community played a huge role in shaping who I am today, nurturing my love for sport and giving me the determination to chase my dreams.

Q: How did your rugby sevens journey begin?

A: I was always involved in sports from a young age, starting with Little Athletics, touch football, and even Highland dancing before finding my passion in Rugby Sevens. My rugby journey started with a little encouragement from Sam Valentine and Craig Coetzee, which led me to join the Roma Echidnas at 16. From there, I represented the Darling Downs Women’s XV side before trialing for the Darling Downs Schoolgirls Sevens team, where I competed at the state championships.

The following year, I again earned a spot on the Darling Downs team, leading to my selection in the Queensland Schoolgirls Sevens squad for the national championships, where we finished third. This was a significant step in my rugby career, eventually leading to the incredible honour of being selected for the Australian Schoolgirls Sevens team. Representing my country on the international stage has been the highlight of my journey so far.

Now, I’ve relocated to the Sunshine Coast, where I’m part of the Queensland Academy of Sport Reds Sevens program in Brisbane while also playing club rugby with the Nambour Toads. This move has allowed me to continue developing my skills and push toward even greater achievements.

Q: What has been the most memorable moment of your rugby career so far?

A: Without a doubt, being selected for the Australian Schoolgirls Sevens team and flying to New Zealand to compete in the Global Youth Sevens competition. The experience was unreal. The team became more than just teammates; they’re now some of my best friends. Playing against incredibly talented players from around the world was an opportunity I’ll never forget. It was a true highlight of my career, and I’ll always cherish the memories and bonds that were formed.

Q: Who has helped you the most on your rugby journey?

A: I have to give a massive shoutout to Mum and Dad for their unwavering support. The number of kilometres they’ve driven to take me to training and games is unbelievable, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Their encouragement and dedication have been crucial to my success.

I also want to sincerely thank everyone who supported my recent fundraiser to help me get to New Zealand for the Global Youth Sevens. Your support means the world to me, and I truly appreciate it.

Q: What are your future goals?

A: My ultimate dream is to represent Australia in Rugby Sevens at the highest level. Right now, I’m working toward making the Australia A Youth Sevens team as the next step in my journey. From there, I aspire to compete in the HSBC Sevens World Series and, ultimately, play for the Australian Women’s Sevens team at the Olympics.

With her talent, determination, and strong support network, Amy Lorenz is undoubtedly a rising star in Australian rugby. Keep an eye on her journey as she chases her dreams on the world stage.
