Sport events soar this summer

Sport fans can look forward to a spectacular line-up of events that will bring world-class athletes and plenty of action to our region in 2026.

Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the Sunshine Coast was a place where sport, community and visitors could come together in the most spectacular way.

“These events showcase world-class talent against our stunning backdrop, create unforgettable experiences and support the businesses that make our region thrive,” Mayor Natoli said.

From 16–18 January, the Suncoast Spinners Wheelchair Basketball Tournament returns to Caloundra Indoor Stadium, showcasing incredible skill and inclusivity in one of Australia’s premier wheelchair basketball competitions.

Beach lovers can watch the Queensland Open from 16–18 January – part of the Queensland Beach Volleyball Tour, followed by the Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Tour on 20–21 January, both taking place on Caloundra’s stunning coastline. These events promise thrilling rallies and a great atmosphere for spectators.

For something truly unique, head to Cotton Tree from 23–26 January for the Kite Karnival, featuring the Australian Freestyle Nationals. Expect colourful skies and jaw-dropping tricks as the nation’s best kite surfers compete.

The Queensland Oztag Junior State Cup held at the Sunshine Coast Stadium over three days from January 30, will showcase the very best talent from around Queensland with Divisions from U10’s – U17s Boys and Girls – all battling it out to be crowned State Champions.

AFL fans won’t miss out either! AFL teams are hitting the Coast for open training sessions: St Kilda (21 January), Brisbane Lions (30 January) and Western Bulldogs (31 January), with a perfect chance to see your heroes up close.

And mark your calendars for 14 February, when the Brisbane Broncos take on the Sunshine Coast Falcons in an NRL pre-season clash at Sunshine Coast Stadium, closely followed by the Melbourne Storm v Gold Coast Titans pre-season game on Saturday 21 February. Get tickets via www.ticketek.com.au

As summer comes to a close on the calendar, Maroochydore Beach will host the Queensland Surf Life Saving Championships from 19 February.
