The Sunshine Coast’s largest sporting organisation, the Sunshine Coast Netball Association, has kicked off their game-changing Respect 4 Umpires (R4U) initiative by raising their white flags at the beginning of their first fixture last Saturday 20 April.
Following a verbal abuse incident last year, Sunshine Coast Netball Association took decisive action to address the issue of umpire disrespect with the R4U initiative which is a combination of awareness, education and on-the-ground support in the form of dedicated welfare officers in white hi-vis watching over the games.
Club spokesperson and key driver of the R4U initiative, Debbie Battaglini said they are celebrating a successful launch that underscores its commitment to fostering a culture of respect on and off the court.
“We have 190 umpires in the association aged from 10 and up and we felt compelled to do something about the unwarranted abuse by players, parents, and coaches. We created the initiative to change the behaviour of spectators, players and coaches towards umpires and it’s incredibly gratifying to see it come to life on the court.
“The start of the R4U initiative marks a significant milestone for our association and the broader sporting community,” Debbie said.
Gabby Parker, SCNA Umpire Convenor, said the response to the R4U initiative exceeded their expectations and she was proud to see the white flags empower the umpires.
“Umpires felt genuinely supported, and we saw players, coaches, and spectators wholeheartedly embracing the values of respect and sportsmanship. The white flags definitely helped create a safe and inclusive space for everyone involved in the game,” Gabby said.
As SCNA celebrates the success of its inaugural fixture under the R4U initiative, the association looks ahead with optimism, committed to furthering its mission of promoting respect and dignity in sport.
