Big season for Jiu Jitsu

Jiu-Jitsu

Once again, the CAZA Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club, located in Noosa Junction, has by its results in Queensland Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Open Championships, showing its high standard of coaching, discipline and teamwork. Held in the Clippers Basketball Stadium Buderim, with a total of 38 teams competing, the Caza club continued on its winning way.

Competing under head coach Professor Yoshi Hasegawa and his coaching panel, their achievements have again been outstanding. With a total of 38 teams competing the results speak for themselves. The Caza club had a team of 56 competing and contesting 136 matches.

At the end of the day, it was again another outstanding medal tally: 34 gold, 30 silver and 17 bronze. Add to this the Caza club won the Overall Team Championship with a total of 1239 points, kids and Juvenile Championship Team 732 points and Men’s Championship Team with 486 points.

For the students of Jiu-Jitsu there is a busy time ahead. Next on the agenda will be 8 October for the Queensland Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Clubs, East Coast Australian Championships to be held in Brisbane. Then from 27 to 29 October , it will be the big one: The Pan Pacific Jiu-Jitsu 2023 IBJJF Championship. This will be held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatics Centre, Aughties Drive, Hall One, Lakeview 2 and 3 Albert Park Melbourne. This is sure to be the biggest competition of the year.

Then on Sunday, 19 November just to keep everyone active, the Gold Coast will hold their Queensland Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Gold Coast Championships. There can’t be any doubt that this sport referred to as the BJJC (Queensland- Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Clubs) is the fastest growing sport and is there for all ages. For one that is steeped in tradition and pride, its future is assured.

Surf competition

There is more good news from the boating section of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving club. As a follow on to receiving a new boat, compliments of sponsors Netanya Noosa, word from the boating fraternity informs us that they have more than a good chance of having a total of eight crews on the water for the upcoming 2023/24 surf boat raising season.

In a discussion with a boat representative the crew tally stands as followers: two junior boys, two junior girls, an under 23 boys and girls, reserve grade ladies and once again two masters. The sweeping this season will have two men standing. If this tally holds for the season (in particular having two experienced sweeps and a possible third) it could for Noosa be a great year.

With boat rowing being a team sport the above possibility will be a great build up to membership numbers. Apart from rowers, in a boating fraternity there is always a good solid back up team needed. A build up of this nature, will definitely put a smile on the faces of the sponsors. Apart from team spirit, club morale will go through the roof. There is nothing like the sight of a surf boat with a crew of five, be they be male or female, sliding down the front of a big green wave: add to this is the fact that there could be another two or three such crews on the same wave. And who knows what will happen next.

Last weekend the boat section conducted a come and try invitation session for possible new members and happy to say some 16 new boys turned up. When young people consider joining surf clubs the sporting side of things is always of importance. Beach patrolling and surf sports go hand in hand, as teamwork and physical fitness is a necessary virtue for both: and never forget that big encouragement -mateship.

While the boat section is planning for another season of competition, so too is Noosa’s iron men and women. Noosa’s Director of Surf Sport, Alan Rogers, is definitely on the ball giving support and encouragement to the rowers and activating and organising a weekend training camp for the Coolangatta Gold contestants. This type of training is vital as it prepares them mentally as well as physically, for the tough grind that lays ahead.

When we mix lifesaving (beach patrolling) and sport it was interesting to see our local international champion weightlifter Taj Marsh reporting back to his surf club to complete his annual proficiency. To see this young man, now making his way in international competition, still being prepared to fulfil his patrol duties, speaks volumes for his patrol captain, his weight coach (who happens to be his father, as well as the Noosa nipper coach, Woogie Marsh) and his family. Well done to all.

Little Athletics

At the recent Coles 2023 Little Athletics Carnival held in Bundaberg and attended by 600 competitors from across the state, it was a very successful and thrilling track and field event. Club spokesperson Tanya Mattila could not be happier. “The atmosphere was electric as our Noosa athletes showed their dedication, determination and talent. They contested a variety of events, including hurdles, sprints, walking races, long and triple jump plus shotput and javelin.”

As if the competition was not enough, a strong south easterly wind added to the challenge: this however only made the athletes more determined. Among the standout performances was U/11s athlete Harvey Zegers, who came away with four medals, taking silver in the 100 and 400m sprints and triple jump and bronze in the long jump.

Not to be outdone, Clara Hermus put in a great effort to win silver in the 700m walk and Zachary Nielsen running in the 60m hurdles won silver and topped it off in the 200m sprint. Eleanor Tillotson came away with a bronze medal in both the 400m sprint and the long jump. Marlon Andrews proved that the rigorous training program paid off by winning the gold medal in the 200m sprint.

Other great team efforts came from Linden and Eliana Hermus, Eli Melinz, William Tillotson and Stella Zegers who competed in the long and triple jumps: and in the running Lenny Juno showed plenty of endurance and team spirit when he contested the 400,800 and the 1500m events.

The overall performance of our Little Athletics has been one of achievements and pride in performance of their chosen disciplines. With the ongoing great work of coaches and the support of families and sponsors such as Coles, anything is possible. We wish them every success.

To top off a great carnival our athletes had the opportunity to meet Olympic gold medallist and Coles Little Athletics Ambassador, Sally Pearson: and many of our athletes went home with the Olympic champion’s autograph. Something, I am sure they will cherish forever. For those interested in the club, the final trial night will be held this Friday 29 September, from 5pm at the Girraween Sports Complex: further information call 0434 121 365.

Our Seahorse Nippers

It’s on again. Time for those beachies who care about others, to assemble at the Noosa Heads Surf Club: water safety and lifesavers will be required from 7-9am this Saturday morning. Purpose. Working and supporting the Seahorse Nippers.

With a total of 43 excited Seahorse Nipper participants, signed up for the program, the organisers are looking for as many helpers as possible. Remember that each participant requires, at least, one on one support. The Seahorse Nippers is an extremely rewarding program for all involved: the smiles and laughter is infectious.

For those with parking or wheelchair problems remember that the courtesy bus will convey families from the Noosa Lions Park, from 6.30am on, to the Surf Club front. Once again, our thanks to our local council for their on-going support. See you on the sand.
