I just got hold of some great photos by Dana Edmunds of my friend Mark Cunningham’s collection of reef salvage, and had to share one with you. When he’s not body surfing Oahu’s coral reefs, Mark can often be found snorkeling them, with the result that he has more than 1000 lost surfboard fins, plus many other treasures, colourfully decomposed by coralline algae. The collection has recently been shown at galleries in Hawaii, prompting the question, why? To which Mark responds: “In light of my own advancing years, these things say something to me about the passage of time. To me the message is, ‘Go surfing now while you can, because eventually you too will be returning to the reef.’”
