COOLUM Tennis have had an early response to the Patron’s tournament with names going up on the board. Leon, Steve, Nobu and Sam are some of the players who have already signed up.
With the up down format, all players are welcome to join in on the day no matter what level of play. Henry is the defending champion. In the history of the tournament, no player has won two years in a row, so we look forward to seeing the results this year. The date is Sunday 30 August and play will commence after 9.00am in rounds of 25 minutes. The competition is played at least four rounds for a result.
At Social tennis, players say goodbye to Rhonda from Shepparton and welcome Lyn also from Shepparton. Not only are there the regular players, but guests give a variety and are very welcome. Tuesday night competition is going well with more players each week. Players interested in a competition with singles and doubles, please contact Adam Spence on 0400 214 419 to book a spot. If you are not so serious, there is social tennis on both Monday and Thursday night.
Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday morning have had a good attendance with a mixture of regular players, holiday makers and new people. The ladies fixtures are having the best tennis ever in a competition where the gap between the top and bottom teams is narrowing.
Coolum Travellers played the top ranked team, Mooloolaba Martinis, last Friday. At the halfway point, Coolum were winning. Some cunning lobbying from Mooloolaba saw them take the lead in sets five and six and they ended up winning on the day by seven games. Joan, Gerda, Annette and Bev played for Coolum with both Gloria and Rosemary coming to cheer on the team.
Not only is competition a great way to improve tennis, but it is also sociable as the sets are played simultaneously with short breaks between sets and lunch at the end. The Travellers have an interesting time ahead with the teams being so close.
Also active at our club are the juniors. Competition is played Friday night and Saturday morning at Coolum with some very impressive skills shown by the juniors. If you are interested in starting tennis for fitness or sociability check out the Facebook page or website. www.tenniscoolum.com.au or contact coach Andrew Ash on 0421 391 505.
