Group fitness across board

THE Noosa Leisure Centre (NLC) takes its commitment to the community’s well-being seriously. Its comprehensive group fitness program offers classes for all ages, abilities – and genders.
Centre co-ordinator Cathy Simon said the emphasis had always been on seniors, but was encouraged to see the recent increase in the number of males attending classes.
“Men, who tend to have a reputation for neglecting their health, are starting to enjoy the many benefits of exercising in a group of like-minded people,” she said.
“With professional and motivating instructors, the support and mateship of other men and results to boot, the guys are coming back for more.”
The rewards of exercise are well-known, and it is not just the body that profits. Even though weight loss, diabetes and blood pressure control and the assistance in the prevention of chronic diseases are among the drawcards, studies have shown that aspects such as the social atmosphere and increase in endorphins after exercise also had a positive impact on the mental health of subjects.
“Activities at the Noosa Leisure Centre that appeal to an increasing number of men are indoor bowls, table tennis and badminton, but they also enjoy other classes such as boxfit, Pilates fusion and body moves,” Ms Simon said.
“We would love to see more males trying out our classes. The ladies and other gentlemen who regularly participate invite all guys out there to join in and make the most of the health advantages of taking part in our group fitness program.”
Group fitness participant Tony King said he had been to a number of fitness classes over his 69 years and Al’s boxfit classes at NLC were the best he had ever been to.
“In fact all the instructors and staff there are very caring and helpful always offering that personal service you rarely get these days,” he said.
Peter Jack, another male participant, said seniors of all abilities, all shapes and sizes come along and exercise together.
“We have a lot of fun,” he said.
