COOLUM TENNIS
COOLUM Tennis has had a busy week with championships and a working bee.
On Tuesday, the B Grade Daytime Ladies played. Only three teams were available this year, as a few of the regular players had other commitments or were injured. The winners were Joan Payton and Karen Mason, a new member. Joan played exceptionally well to help her and her partner take out the title.
The B Grade Daytime Mixed welcomed two new teams. Gerda and Willem Selens have only been club members for a year and Steve and Cherie Down also decided to contest the championship. This was Cherie’s first competition.
The winners were Lynn Heath and Peter McCall but there was only four points difference between second and fifth place after four sets in the round robin competition. Lynn and Peter will now play off against the winners of the Night time competition.
The club has welcomed back a past player, Alan Bardwell. Alan was a keen Veteran’s Tennis player and some of his ex-team mates were very pleased to see him.
On Sunday, there were lots of volunteers for the working bee. Henry was in charge of putting together the picnic table outside court one with Tony Mason ably assisting. Leon Nguyen, Peter McCall, Des Adsett, Noelene Cook, Coco Oda and Annette Adsett tidied up the grounds and Annette planted some new plants donated by her cousin in Brisbane. Adam also needed some assistance to erect his shed to store gear for Noosa District Tennis. We will be pleased to see the office not used as a store room. Thanks Gerda for being the photographer and Coco volunteering to help out with Facebook.
During the week the club held a committee meeting and welcomed new Sunshine Coast regional Participation Leader, Nick Crispin, and set dates for both the Open Day on Saturday 30 January and the Annual General Meeting for Sunday 7 February.
The club is collecting quotes for upgrading the hard courts, especially courts three and four and will need to increase income to prepare for the future expenses.
Adult Membership and Holiday Membership will stay the same, but the Key Membership is increasing to $400.
Family Membership – two adults and at least one child – will be $250 plus $50 for each additional child. The Junior membership goes to $65.
This is still an incredible deal as fixture players receive a shirt and juniors receive discount on both coaching and purchases from the Pro Shop.
Fee for fixtures and court hire will stay the same, but the fees for daytime social tennis will increase to $5 for members and $10 for visitors.
Daytime fixture teams are nearing the end of their season.
The Division One team have had challenging competition in the higher grade.
The Division Five team are in an unassailable number three position even though they have been plagued by injuries and players having other commitments.
With Christmas approaching, the club is looking forward to the Annual Christmas Party. This year, the party will also include the presentation of prizes for the club championships. All tennis players are welcome on Sunday, 6 December.
