AUSTRALIAN of the Year Rosie Batty has backed calls for more crisis centres to help women and children fleeing domestic violence situations.
Speaking at the recent University of the Sunshine Coast’s Make It Stop symposium, Ms Batty said it is incredibly important to have crisis services available to those in need.
“When you do decide to leave a relationship that is when you are the most vulnerable. It is incredibly important that crisis services are available and able not just for women to hide in, but to begin the therapeutic journey towards rebuilding their lives in a safe way,” she said.
“It’s not a choice for everybody and there shouldn’t be that expectation that a victim should have to change their identity but we do need to have choices.”
Noosa Council candidate Ingrid Jackson said Noosa Shire was in desperate need of a crisis centre for victims of domestic violence.
When announcing her policies Ms Jackson said it was important to make Noosa a more supportive place for families by assisting community groups that support families as well as establish a crisis shelter in Noosa.
Ms Jackson said there is currently a gap in services for domestic violence victims with a lack of crisis accommodation available.
