Behind bars for chappy

A LOCAL school deputy has answered a friend’s call for help and has been “arrested” for his efforts.
Noosaville State School deputy principal Wayne Carty has spent nearly a week behind bars in a bid to raise funds and awareness for the school’s chaplain Michelle Gamerio.
Much-loved school chappy has been searching for fund-raising ideas to keep her greatly needed talents and services to the Noosaville students. Without the funds, she must reduce her hours at the school, starting next term, and that’s unthinkable for those who have come to know and love her for the past few years.
After a lot of discussion, Mr Carty decided to respond to the call for help and has been locked up in a cell for the past week and hopes to be released on Thursday 24 March in time for school holidays.
Last Friday 18 March, Constable Murray Sandilands and Senior Constable Tara Kermond were on hand with students, teachers and supporters to make sure Mr Carty was comfortable in the confines of his cell.
“It’s all for a great cause, and I’m happy to get behind the fund-raising cause for our chappy Michelle,” Mr Carty said.
“She’s an amazing part of our school, and we want our kids to know she’s there when their needs arise.”
As for the chappy herself, Michelle says chaplains are in schools to meet the humanitarian needs of the school community.
“As chaplain, my role takes on many forms,” she said.
“I provide a free breakfast program each morning and offer one on one as well as group social skills programs.
“I also support students and families through their many issues including grief and loss, financial difficulties and isolation.
“I believe each child is precious and that we need to value children by encouraging, listening and supporting them through life’s toughest challenges.”
Michelle said she hoped the fund-raiser would not only raise money but awareness also.
“It’s all about highlighting the fact that chaplaincy is a vital part of our school and needs support from our community to exist,” she said.
“The fact that our deputy Wayne Carty has committed to supporting this cause is proof of that and is testament to the great fellow he is.”
The Tewantin Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank and its manager Wayne Hoens kicked off the fund-raiser with a donation of $1000 in the hope of inspiring other Noosa businesses to do the same.
“Mr Carty’s commitment is fantastic, and we’re very happy to get behind this great cause and supporting Michelle,” Mr Hoens said.
At the time of print, about $4000 has been raised.
