Muscle to the metal

THE Sunshine Coast will soon play host to some of Australia’s well-known Bathurst racing greats as they hit the track for a good cause.
Although many would relish the opportunity to see the likes of Peter Brock, Allan Moffat and John Goss return to the road, it is the famous cars they drove during the glory days of Bathurst in the ’60s and ’70s, that will return.
The Leukaemia Foundation’s Aussie Muscle Car Run will see legendary muscle cars such as the Monaro, Falcon GT, Torana and Mustang take participants on a 2125km sweep of Queensland.
Held from 31 July to 6 August, the event will pass through Tewantin on Friday 5 August.
The Leukaemia Foundation’s director of community fundraising Cassandra Creed said it is the first time the event will take place in Queensland after several events in other states.
“We invite car clubs and owners from the Sunshine Coast and surrounds to sign up for this iconic motoring event that celebrates an era of the most outstanding vehicle competition in the world,” she said.
“With places limited, it is an event that cannot be missed by any Aussie muscle car enthusiast that yearns for the glory days of Bathurst.”
The unique fundraising event gives owners of Aussie muscle cars made between 1963 and 1977, including replicas, to showcase their legendary vehicles with the community.
Registration includes accommodation, daily breakfast and dinner, motor sport events, car livery, overnight security for the vehicles, support mechanics, entertainment and more.
The money raised from the event will help fund life-saving blood cancer research and provide support for families affected by blood cancer.
The Leukaemia Foundation receives no direct government support and relies on the generosity of the community to help patients beat their blood cancer.
