Beach run, Ultra fun

By JOLENE OGLE

For many of us, the thought of running 80kms is enough to make you lose your breath, but for the affectionately-named NUTRs, it’s just a training run.
Tomorrow night, the Noosa Ultra and Trail Runners (NUTRs) will set off from Caloundra beach and run throughout the night, finishing at Noosa Spit just in time for an 8am barbecue breakfast.
NUTRs founder Andy Bowen said running on the beach at night can be a beautiful experience with the moon and stars lighting the way.
Founded 18 months ago, the NUTRs group offers runners the opportunity to train with friends while enjoying great views.
“The goal of the group is to encourage people of all levels to get active outdoors and for them to appreciate what they can achieve,” Andy said.
“Since the group started, all members have exceeded their own expectations, running further than they had previously thought possible, got healthier and, importantly, made new friends.”
Andy said it was amazing what people could do if given the right encouragement and motivation.
“It blows me away when I look at how far some of our members have come in such a short time, many of whom had never run only 18 months ago,” he said.
The NUTRs team is running throughout the night to support local runner, Harriet Smith, as she prepares to represent Australian in the World Short Course Mountain Running Championships in Italy.
“Harriet has gone from strength to strength this year as she has focused on trail and mountain races, picking up a number of wins and a course record at the gruelling Mt Glorious mountain race,” Andy said.
The Caloundra to Noosa beach run is open to anyone and if 80kms is a little beyond your current training level, you can join the NUTRs at any point along the way.
Details of the event can be found on the group Facebook page through www.nutrs.com.au.
