Meeting to protest golf club sell-off

HUNDREDS of locals are expected to gather for a community meeting on Saturday to help save the Peregian Springs Golf Course.
Peregian Springs Supporters Group leader Greg Smith said it was important for the community to come together despite the last minute withdrawal of a development application to rezone a section of the course that was before the Sunshine Coast Regional Council.
“Despite the last minute withdrawal … residents of Peregian Springs are still determined to hold a community meeting to provide an opportunity for discussion about the development and to make plans for future action,” he said.
Sunshine Coast councillor Steve Robinson is expected to attend the meeting and a representative from developer Aveo has also been invited also.
“Aveo’s withdrawal following the decision of the Sunshine Coast Council’s planning officers to unequivocally recommend refusal of the development applications is seen by the community as only a tactical and temporary back down while Aveo continues to sell the remaining golf course frontage blocks,” Mr Smith said.
“It is highly likely they will revisit the development applications in some form at a later stage.
“As a result, the community wants to get the views of council, Aveo and residents’ groups on what the future holds for the golf course that is an essential element of the amenity of this growing suburb.”
Mr Smith said the meeting was also an opportunity for the community to send a clear message to both the Sunshine Coast Council and Aveo that it will “never support redevelopment of any part of the golf course land”.
The public meeting will be held on Saturday 13 August, from 3pm, at the Indoor Sports Centre at Peregian Springs State School, 191 The Avenue, Peregian Springs.
