THE Noosa District Orchid and Foliage Society will hold its spring show at the CWA Hall, Maple Street in Cooroy on 16 and 17 September.
There will be a large array of plants on show and lots more for sale whose colours and perfume will astound. Entry to the fair is $2 per person.
One of the orchids on display is the soft cane Dendrobium. These are one of the easiest orchids to grow in this area.
The plants originate from northern India and grow on deciduous trees. The area has a similar rainfall pattern as the Sunshine Coast; wet summers and dry winters. The plants can be grown in a pot or grown very successfully on a suitable host tree.
They should be watered heavily from November through to the end of March then given a rest period until the buds appear.
These plants flower along the stem and a plant with 50 or 60 flowers looks fantastic. Any person who wants a water wise plant for their garden cannot go past a few of these.
They flower at the same time as most Australia natives so the colour combinations are unbelievable.
