Mums take the cake (and don’t eat it)

By Margaret Maccoll

A Noosa Council fitness program for mums has been named Program of the Year by Parks and Leisure Australia during its recent state conference.
Council’s Community Development Officer Amanda Tie said watching the program develop from a trial program to help mums “get fit” into a large, ongoing program had been the greatest reward for her.
“Mums, the community and local businesses all benefit,” she said.
“Mums become fitter and more confident during the program. Many then continue on to join fitness programs provided by local businesses, benefitting the businesses, while the community benefits overall by having fewer isolated and depressed mums.”
The Active Mums program targets women with children under five years of age and provides a series of free, core-foundation classes to help re-establish core muscle function after childbirth. After completing the core-foundation classes, Mums can choose from a wide range of low-cost fitness classes for a period of one year. After that period ends, mums can then transfer to full-rate memberships.
The Queensland Government provided $10,050 to Noosa Council to deliver Active Mums Noosa to help get women and girls active for life.
Noosa Council contributed an additional $5000 to the grant to help deliver a suite of physical activities to encourage recent mums and pregnant women to get active and stay active, and it partnered with local businesses to deliver the program.
