For the Noosa sporting fraternity it would have to be the success story of the year.
For the first time since 2008 the Noosa Pirates A Grade Rugby League team has made the grand final.
In what some fans are describing as their best second half for several seasons, the Pirates last Saturday defeated Kawana 20 to 8 to put them into the final.
“The defense shown by our players for the full eighty minutes right across the field, was truly outstanding,” Club President Greg Christerson said.
“But not only that, the fact that we have made the final is something of a fairy tale. It has been one of those seasons during which everyone in our club has really put in a great effort. Coaches, players, supporters, the Sunshine Coast Falcons and sponsors combined to turn our fairy tale into a reality.”
It all started in the first months of the season during which time the Pirates were definitely in doubt as to whether or not they would be able to field an A Grade team.
But owing to the combined efforts of President Greg Christerson and CEO of the Sunshine Coast League James Ward, this was not only addressed but also resolved, much to the satisfaction of all involved.
“At one stage it looked as though there would only be five teams in the competition,” said Pirates Secretary Lexie Mawn.
“However with Falcons offering to supply players to our club it meant a full team for us and this enabled us to furnish a sixth team for the competition. It was a win/win situation for all involved.”
While this was being organised, Pirates head coach Ron Greentree was performing miracles. Not only was he fulfilling his duties as coach, but he was leading in such a fashion, that despite going through a tough season, he also maintained high morale amongst his players.
As a result of his all-round performance, not only has he taken ther Pirates to the grand final, but he has finished the season with a good solid group of players for the season ahead.
“On looking back on past achievements,” said one supporter, “this could be the return of the Magnificent Seven. We won the premiership in 1977/97 and 2007 – this year is another seven so Maroochydore had better be careful.”
Add to this in the junior ranks Pirates Under 15s will also play in their grand final at Gympie on Saturday.
From the man who runs the gate to the ladies behind the bar – to the ball boys who run the line and the ever-present RSL and Hang Loosa, it has definitely been the Year of the Pirates.
This Sunday it will be Pirates vs Maroochydore grand final at Kawana – good luck to all.
