Cooroy’s Christmas decorations are something to behold.
There are decorations on the roundabout, rooftops, street poles and of course the magnificent Cooroy Christmas tree.
They are lovely to look during the day and at night. It’s hard not to get in the Christmas spirit when you visit the town.
The town officially turns on the lights on Friday 1 December, starting at 6.45pm. The Four Corners Quartet, made up of four talented youngsters will be performing Christmas songs to welcome people to town. The centrepiece to the town’s decorations, the Studio Steel Christmas tree is lit up about 7pm.
Each year a local child who has experienced some difficulty in the year is chosen to do the official job of switching on the lights on the magnificent tree.
This year it is Grade 6 student Anjali, who had a stroke earlier in the year. Anjali has been recovering well over many months and her role in the Christmas celebrations has encouraged her rehabilitation further as she’s set herself a goal to be able to walk on the evening.
There is also a weather forecast of 100 per cent chance of snow, so it looks like Cooroy will have a brief white Christmas on the night! There is something about twinkling lights and snowflakes gently drifting to the ground that creates a sense of wonder and the smiles on everyone’s face is a beautiful sight to see.
Lots of places decorate for Christmas but the thing that makes the Cooroy decorations extra special is that they are all done by community volunteers and are funded by 10 local businesses: Cooroy Chamber of Commerce Inc, Cooroy Pest Control, Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank, Cooroy Supa IGA, Cooroy RSL, LiveLife Pharmacy Cooroy, Hinternoosa Real Estate, Sunshine Mitre 10, Studio Steel and Action Traffic!
There are also 23 businesses that have decorated their windows for the QMP Shop Window Trail which delights both young and old alike. Plus you can vote for your favourite window throughout December for a chance to win a $100 Cooroy Supa IGA voucher.
There were approximately 30 volunteer Christmas elves who spent their Saturday morning decorating Cooroy with lights, tinsel, garland and baubles. They were treated to coffee and cake to give them energy throughout the morning, thanks to Richies Bakery and Fox and Hound Espresso. Noosa Care Inc sponsored volunteer shirts for them and others who are volunteering for Christmas in Cooroy which they all wear with pride.
