Pomona bowls
THE news of the week was the excellent showing by our District Champion of Champions Elizabeth Dewhirst and Jennie Smith against Susan Williams and Nicole Williams in the Division Champion of Champions. After 4 1/4 hours of play, the score was 19-all after 21 ends. Unfortunately, the extra end did not go to Pomona going down by one shot, but everyone involved, be they players or spectators, declared it to have been an enthralling game. Better luck next year, Pomona.
The ladies Consistency competition started this week with close games on all rinks. Desley O’Neill defeated Linda McDougall, Phyllis Roebuck defeated Ruth Kelliher and Tina Camp won on forfeit from Jennie Smith as did Glenda Rohde when Gaye Bible could not play.
The men’s pennant teams once again had a bad week with both teams losing their games. – Hidden Jack
Noosa Heads Bowls
NOOSA Heads ladies got their pennant season off to a flying start last week with Division 2 scoring maximum points in their matches against Pacific Paradise, and our Division 4 ladies also winning their morning and afternoon matches over Kawana.
Men’s Div.1 improved on last week’s performance taking the points over Buderim- the overall margin was 22 shots. No such joy for Div.3 who went down on all rinks at Coolum. But, good news for Div.6, taking all 8 points from their encounter with Kawana.
The monthly Noosa 1500 Open Pairs event was staged on 4 August, with top prize going to David Balchin and Darren Redman from Coolum. Keeping it in the family, second money went to Brenda Balchin and Marilyn Clayton. Winners of the first-round losers pool were New Zealand visitors Graham Clark and Len Harliwich.
Tuesday men’s pairs winners were Brian Emery and Tony Whelan, with the next biggest margin scored by Steve Bowie who teamed with Victorian visitor Graham Crapper. The triples winners on Wednesday were the team of Locke, Boustead and Spence.
There was another record size field for the Jackpot Pairs on Friday with the winners, yet again, Mal Lloyd and Ron Wallish. Runners-up were Gill Macdonald and John Boyle. The Chalker is extremely pleased to
report that the Jackpot, which had been building to large proportions in recent weeks, was finally claimed by two senior local members. Saturday social triples was washed out by the heavy local showers. – The Chalker

Third: team from South Australia and New Soth Wales, L. Davies, J. Kester, A. Morgan and R. Kirkland.
Tuesday 5 August Noosa Landscape Club select pairs: Evelyn Coghlan and Van Vignon were winners. Margaret Heir and Julie Anderson, runners-up.
Wednesday 6 August: Options Eye Care Men’s Bowls: Alan Newton and Lance Avent were winners (2 wins +25). Runners-up: Mike Lowe and Gary Moss (1 win +13). Triples winners: Stan Chandler, Hein Heinrich (1 win +4). Jackpot $57 was not won and carries over.
Friday 8 August: Laguna Estate Open triples. Winning team: Carol Blake, Bernie Smith, John Marsland and Alan Collins. Runners-up: M. Kirkland, D. Kester and R. Kirkland. The margin jackpot of $67 was unclaimed, so will carry over. – Heath Costello
Cooroy Bowls
The Cooroy Sports Hub, home of the Cooroy Community Bowls Club was in full swing on Saturday night for a private function. The party goers who were enjoying Barefoot Bowls were disappointed when the rains came but many have vowed to return. The venue should be fully operational in the next couple of weeks.
Tuesday jackpot pair’s winners were Roy Wall and Kerry Knowles. Runners- up were Ann Lerch and Sandra Robinson. There will be a game on again this week at 12.30pm.
Saturday Jackpot Pairs started a bit earlier this week due to the afternoon festivities. Slightly damp conditions made for interesting bowls but Russell Butler and John Langdale were able to handle the conditions admirably taking home the prize money. Sandra French and Jeff White were runners- up.
This week there will be games on Tuesday, Thursday (Quicksilver Limousines Day), Friday afternoon (ideal for beginners), Saturday and Sunday afternoon. – Julie Ainscough
