Wing walk celebrates diversity

About 300 community members united on Gympie Terrace on Friday morning to walk along the river to celebrate all abilities at the inaugural Sunshine Butterflies Walk in Wings.

Sunshine Butterflies member Taco had taken a week to create and decorate his wings for the walk, proudly accompanied by his sister.

Businesses, organisations, schools, sporting and community groups and individuals from all walks of life donned wings and the colour purple and joined in the Noosa River walk to show their support of the inclusive community event.

“Seeing the community unite and walk as one was nothing short of amazing,” chief executive officer and founder Leanne Walsh said.

Chris Kerrisk of event sponsor’s Cerge your Digital Concierge was thrilled to be part of the event.

“I discovered the Walk in Wings event and our business Cérge are trying to achieve the same thing and increase the awareness amongst business owners, sporting and community groups about disability,“ he said.

“Sunshine Butterflies represents the tip of the iceberg of one in five Australians who are also highly valuable customers that organisations should stop ignoring and start to prioritise.”

Walk in Wings will be an annual event to bring the community together to break down the social and physical barriers that people living with disability face daily.
