AFTER a hugely successful 10 weeks on the Sunshine Coast, the Jamie Oliver’s Mobile Kitchen is set to depart from its temporary home on the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) campus.
While on the Sunshine Coast, Jamie’s Ministry of Food Mobile Kitchen delivered two five-week cooking courses to participants including students, staff and the local community.
The youngest participant was aged 12 and the oldest was 74.
While at USC, participants of Jamie’s Ministry of Food program used 532 steaks, 1468 eggs and 66 kilos of fresh cherry tomatoes as they learned how to cook from scratch with fresh ingredients.
Delivered by Jamie’s Ministry of Food Australia with the support of the Sunshine Coast Council and USC, local residents took up the opportunity to access and participate in an innovative, community-based cooking program built on Jamie’s beliefs about cooking and the associated impact on healthy living.
Participants signed up for a five-week cooking course, comprising one 90-minute cooking class per week with up to 12 participants in each class. Jamie’s Ministry of Food Mobile Kitchen delivered the hands-on basic cooking classes led by a team of dedicated food trainers.
USC vice-chancellor Professor Greg Hill said Jamie’s Mobile Kitchen provided an invaluable opportunity for USC bachelor of nutrition students to engage with a diverse range of people from the Sunshine Coast community.
“The program equipped participants with basic cooking skills while generating further interaction between the university and our wider community,” he said.
The Mobile Kitchen will now continue its journey in Logan Central, with classes set to commence this month.
