NOOSA local Margaret Robertson devotes a sizeable percentage of her time to brighten up the lives of children with disabilities.
Head coach of the National Special Olympics Basketball team for the past 15 years, Margaret also coaches in two special schools in Nambour and Currimundi on a weekly basis.
This is a commitment she has taken on over the past four years. Margaret juggles her voluntary work with her day-job as on-site manager care-taker at Emerald Resort, Hastings Street.
Why do you volunteer?
I coached generic basketball for 30 years in New South Wales and was asked if I would like to coach the Special Olympics team and I just love it.
What do you like most about volunteering?
It’s very very rewarding. I honestly think I get more out of it than the athletes. When the athletes start achieving and they are able to show their parents, you look over and both have a huge smile on their faces.
What do you love most about Noosa?
The quietness, the beauty and the friendliness. The Noosa community is also very supportive of our team.
Name one thing on your bucket list.
I don’t really have a bucket list, but if I were to say something it would be for our team to get another medal when we compete at the World Games in Los Angeles later this year.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
I collect ceramic dolls. I have about 20 now, one I have had since I was three years old.
