AI – the devil or an angel

In a thought-provoking session hosted by Community Bank Tewantin-Noosa in partnership with the Noosa Chamber of Commerce, local business owners gathered to explore one of the most pressing questions of our time: Is Artificial Intelligence a threat to small business—or its greatest opportunity?

Held at the Bendigo Community Bank Tewantin Branch, the event featured Guy Hamilton, Chair of Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services, with support from Branch Manager Bill Shakoor. Together, they unpacked the myths, realities, and practical applications of AI in small business settings.

The message of the evening was refreshingly grounded: “AI isn’t a luxury or a threat,” Hamilton emphasized. “It’s a powerful ally when used wisely.”

The session also addressed concerns around ethics, job displacement, and digital literacy. Attendees were encouraged to see AI not as a replacement for human ingenuity, but as a complement to it – freeing up time for creativity, strategy, and connection.

As Noosa continues to champion sustainable development and community-led innovation, events like this remind us that technology can be shaped by our values. With thoughtful adoption, AI can help local businesses thrive – not just survive – in a rapidly changing world.

Local Businesses can take advantage of future Noosa Chamber of Commerce community events and learning opportunities, which include understanding the wise use of AI to assist small businesses to grow. At just $150 per year to join, a membership is a small investment for any business.

The Chamber Annual General Meeting will be held on the 4 December. For more information, or to join the Chamber: www.noosachamberofcommerce.au
