Calling all Wood Artisans: Entries now open

Woodworkers and artisans from across Australia are invited to enter the prestigious Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize – a woodworking competition with a conscience.

From beginners to seasoned professionals, woodworkers of all levels are encouraged to submit entries. Finalists will be in the running to win an overall cash prize of $10,000 as well as a share in a further prize pool of $6500.

What sets the Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize apart from other woodworking competitions, is that all applicants have to work in sustainably harvested native timbers, weed timbers or timbers that have been repurposed, salvaged or recycled. It’s a platform to celebrate sustainably made works that blend environmental stewardship with artistic brilliance!

Finalist pieces of the Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize go on to form the feature exhibition at the Maleny Wood Expo, which will be held 3-5 May, 2025, in the picturesque town of Maleny, Sunshine Coast.

A proud and long-standing initiative of environmental non-profit, Barung Landcare, the Maleny Wood Expo is set to bring, yet again, a fantastic three day event to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland as it celebrates its 26th year! The Wood Expo is known as one of the best wood shows in Australia attracting up to 10,000 people to the region offering a diversity of workshops, live entertainment and over 150 exhibitors to visit. It has been a beacon for woodworking enthusiasts, and people wishing to support our local artisans, fostering an appreciation for the natural environment and the sustainable use of timber.

The competition theme for the 2025 Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize is ‘Whimsy in Wood’ where creativity knows no bounds! Entrants are invited to explore this theme and create works under the categories of Furniture, Sculpture or Tiny Treasures in ways that captivate and delight the judges and audience alike. Where each piece tells a unique story and sparks joy, awe and wonder in every admirer. From intricate carvings to fantastical furniture and tantalising Tiny Treasures, let your inner whimsy shine through in ways that transcend the ordinary, and spark inspiration.

The competition is a unique opportunity for woodworkers to showcase their skills, and for the community to witness the artistry that emerges when craftspersonship meets sustainability.

Entries are now open until 8 March, 2025. For more information and to submit your work, please visit malenywoodexpo.com
