Spring orchid show coming up

Noosa Council area is fortunate to have a large variety of native orchids growing naturally. As an orchid lover I am always watching for these gems. Australia has 3 varieties of Cymbidiums and all 3 grow in this area. They have pendulous flower spikes and the growing habit has adapted to our very changeable conditions over thousands of years. These can be seen growing high up out of the side of trees.

Another orchid once abundant in this area is Dendrobium speciosum (King Orchid). This orchid is one of the best orchids in the world. They are native to our area they can be grown without any special attention and flower every year. I try to encourage people to buy plants from the nurseries as the numbers in the wild have been heavily depleted.

This winter has been wet so to combat cold and wet I cover my green houses with plastic. The plants can handle being cool but not wet and cold.

The Noosa and District Orchid club hold its Spring show on 23-24 August at the Cooroy Memorial hall. Our next monthly meeting will be held at the Tinbeerwah Hall on 10 August.
